Different Types of Fabric Yarns

The foundation of any fabric begins with its raw material—fibre. Fibres, either natural or manufactured, are spun into yarn, which is subsequently woven or knitted into fabric.

Choosing the right yarn is critical, as it determines the durability, texture, and overall feel of the fabric. At Warwick Fabrics, we offer a range of yarn compositions to suit diverse needs, each with its unique properties and purposes. Let’s explore the different types of yarns we provide and their applications in textiles.

Natural/Synthetic Blend

Composition: A combination of natural fibres (like cotton or wool) and synthetic fibres (like polyester or nylon).

Uses & Purpose: This blend offers the best of both worlds: the comfort and breathability of natural fibres with the strength, durability, and wrinkle resistance of synthetic fibres. It is ideal for upholstery and drapery where both comfort and resilience are required.

Natural Fibre Blend - "Warwick Naturally"

Composition: Warwick Naturally fabrics contains a minimum of 70% natural fibres, which might include linen, cotton or wool. These fabrics not only bring an organic feel to spaces but are crafted to highlight the natural beauty and texture of their fibres, offering a tactile and inviting experience.

Uses & Purpose: Natural fibre blends provide a luxurious feel and excellent breathability. They are often used in high-end drapery and lightweight upholstery. The combination enhances the texture, moisture-wicking ability, and softness of the fabric.

100% Linen

Composition: Made from the fibres of the flax plant.

Uses & Purpose: Linen is a timeless fabric, celebrated not only for its elegance but also for its organic, breathable nature. Unlike synthetic fabrics or even more processed natural fibres, linen retains its soft, flowing character. Its slightly irregular texture comes from the natural fibres of the flax plant, making it less rigid and more relaxed over time. Despite its soft feel, linen is surprisingly strong, making it suitable for upholstery. Linen drapes beautifully, letting in soft, diffused light while providing privacy.

100% Cotton

Composition: Derived from the seed fibres of the cotton plant.

Uses & Purpose: Cotton is soft, breathable, and highly versatile. It is used in everything from upholstery, drapery, and home textiles such as sheets and towels. Its natural comfort makes it a popular choice for everyday wear.

Wool Blend

Composition: Derived from the fleece of sheep.

Uses & Purpose: Wool is prized for its warmth, elasticity, and resilience. In upholstery, wool is often used for its natural durability, rich texture, and ability to retain warmth while offering breathability. Wool blends, which combine wool with fibres like acrylic or polyamide, are especially popular in drapery and upholstery due to their enhanced strength and wrinkle resistance. These blends provide a soft, luxurious finish and are ideal for high-end seating, curtains, and decorative accents. Additionally, wool's natural flame resistance and moisture-wicking properties make it a safe and practical choice for both residential and commercial interiors.

Vinyl/Faux Leather

Composition: Synthetic materials designed to mimic real leather.

Uses & Purpose: Vinyl and faux leather are durable, easy to clean, and water-resistant. They are commonly used in upholstery, automotive interiors, and accessories like decorative and functional upholstery. These materials provide an affordable, animal-friendly alternative to genuine leather.

Leather

Composition: Made from the tanned hide of animals, usually cows.

Uses & Purpose: Leather is known for its durability, elegance, and timeless appeal. It is used in upholstery, and decorative applications. Leather ages beautifully, developing a unique patina over time. We offer a selection of Warwick leather options from Thomas Maxwell Leathers. Sourced from regions with moderate climates and sustainable farming practices, these leathers come from healthier, larger animals less affected by pests and disease. Each hide is tanned and drum-dyed for deep, uniform colour, then lightly buffed for a refined finish. Only premium, unbranded hides are used.

Recycled Yarn

Composition: Made from repurposed fibres, including post-consumer and post-industrial waste.

Uses & Purpose: Recycled yarn is an eco-friendly option that reduces waste and environmental impact. It is used in sustainable upholstery and various home textiles. Our range of recycled fabrics called Encore.  Encore fabrics were created in response to demand for sustainable options, developed with top yarn suppliers. By recycling materials, we reduce landfill waste. These eco-friendly textiles deliver quality, performance, and a low environmental impact. To earn the Encore label, fabrics must contain at least 40% recycled yarn, with many exceeding this standard.
